Joy and Grounding in Nature

boysriverThis past weekend was amazing in Toronto.  We took the kiddos for a long walk each day and enjoyed breathing in the negative ions along the Humber River.  Going for a long walk in nature is not only beautiful, but it is very grounding as well.

Kids just naturally gravitate toward nature.  The boys were playing in the dirt and hurling sticks over the rocks and into the water.  Without even knowing it, they were grounding themselves in nature and having a joyful time doing it.  The result: happy kids.

As the weather gets warmer I intend to be out there every day with my boys getting dirty and having fun.  That’s one of the reasons we had kids after all – to take a break from being adults and remember what it’s like to let loose, make a funny face, and be ridiculous!

The grounding effect is just a bonus.  It will calm your nerves and your mind, and reduce your stress. So when is the best time to get outside and ground yourself?  Right now!

Turn off the TV and Grow

learningOne of the biggest hurdles to my self-development and overall joy is that I never took time for myself.  While awaiting the birth of our 3rd son, it really hit me hard just how much I had lost myself.  I was convinced that I would have my time to shine when the kids were older.  I made myself less important and never took action to follow my dreams.  However, when you don’t do things that make you happy and grow your soul on a daily basis, your energy and life-force will take a heavy hit.

I found it hard just to make it through the days, and by the time the kids were in bed there was nothing left in my tank to fuel my evenings.  I was lethargic and often zoned out in front of the television for an hour just to have some “me” time.

But let me tell you this: Sitting in front of the TV for a few hours has nothing to do with recharging.  It’s going to deplete your energy tank and it’s going to make you shrink instead of grow.  And if you’re not growing, you’re dying.

The odds are that you’re not watching shows based spiritual enlightenment or a documentary on how to make yourself independently happy.  Chances are pretty high that you’re watching The Walking Dead, Duck Dynasty, or caught in the soul sucking habit of endlessly flipping through 100s of channels and then complaining that “nothing is on”.

If I happen to watch TV these days it’s because there is a specific show that brings a lot of joy to me.  Which means that I watch a LOT less TV than I ever have in my entire life.  There is nothing wrong with watching a little TV, provided it makes you happy and feeds your soul, but if you’re watching endless hours of television each and every night, ask yourself this: What am I avoiding?  What am I numbing in myself?  What am I missing in my life?  What do I really desire, and how do I want to feel?

passion

These days I choose to end my days very differently.  I read, blog, research, and plan.  I practice gratitude, ask for guidance, and do whatever I can to show myself love.  I talk with my husband more.  When you connect with your family instead of the television, relationships will flourish and love will grow.

When I regard my past, I realize that I don’t want to keep falling into the same loop of behaviours over and over again.  I want to bust through the house I have built around myself and venture into the unknown.  The only way to do this is by learning and growing.  Be in the present moment and look for joy in those moments.  Look people in the eye and talk.  Ask questions.  Make connections.  Send and receive love.

So turn off the TV and grow.  Go outside. Play hockey. Do whatever it is that feeds your soul and you can fill your energy tank with love and joy.  Shift your focus. At the end of the day my tank is full because I spend my time wisely, and I feel whole and complete.  I wish the same for each and every person on this planet.  Do what you love, always.  Grow yourself, and you will have the love and energy you need to live your best life.

XO.

My Journey: Connecting to Spirit

bmsI was very resistant to this idea, being a show me the hard science type of girl, but I am now a firm believer that every single one of us has a guardian angel to guide us.  They are present with us at birth, remain with us throughout life, and will be at our sides as our last breath leaves our physical body, returning us to the spirit world.

Our guides want us to lead our right and perfect lives, and we are free to call on them whenever we need help.  There is no task too big or too small for our angels to help with, and are ready to serve us because serving us is serving God.  Our guardian angels have no sense of ego either, because they have never been human.  That means that they have no sense of “self” apart from the world.  They simply want to serve and help us live our birth right: a life of ease and flow in which we fulfill our life’s purpose.

And not only do we have guides, but there are archangels (the heavy artillery), and an entire ministry of angels who cover literally every single problem you may have, such as finding a good parking space or finding an appropriate house to buy.  All we have to do is connect with them regularly and ask for what we need. I have been calling upon Archangel Michael lately, because it is he who brings us closer to our life’s purpose and can give us a confidence boost of strength and dedication when we feel ourselves slowing down.  Also Raphael, to bring me into balance and re-energize my body, mind and spirit.  If you want to learn more, google is your best friend ;).

I have been using this simple prayer quite regularly to ask for help when I need it thanks to Sonia Choquette, author of Ask Your Guides: “Ministry of angels, oversee all that I do and make it easy, magical, and full of gifts. Thank you.”  I then feel the angels’ presence and ask for what I need.

I have been interested in spirit for a long time now, but I catapulted myself into this world after seeing a psychic medium in Oshawa about 6 weeks ago, Effie Dimitropoulos.  Effie told me something that I already knew: I had the ability to do exactly what she was doing.  She said that I was a gifted medium like her, and that I had a family member, my maternal grandfather I later learned, who was gifted as well.  Apparently whenever I can’t find something that is right in front of my face, it is my grandfather playing tricks on me, and I used to play with him often as a young girl.

Effie told me that I have premonitions (yes, they usually come in dreams) and can tell the history of objects simply by holding them in my hands (no luck there yet, but I keep trying) and that by honing in on my meditation skills and my third eye, I will tune into these energies.  And I do so as often as a 4-week old baby allows.

I think I was drawn to Effie because of her spirit and her keen third eye ability.  Everything she had on her table was indigo, the colour of the third eye.  I didn’t even know at the time the significance of this shade of purple, but funnily enough I had brought with me a purple notebook and a purple pen!

I now call on my guides and archangels daily for guidance and ease of life.  I have only once heard something from my angels, but it was exactly what I needed to hear at the time, and I look forward to making stronger connections with them as time charges on.  There is something innately calming about having my angels near, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.  I am so very fortunate to be on my current life path.

Resistance.

bigleapThe newborn honeymoon is over and Arlo is awake and crying much of the time these days.  Neither him nor I have gotten much sleep the past 72 hours which means that most of my healthy practices are headed down the toilet.  Today I have already been to Starbucks instead of hitting up the green juice stored in the fridge.  Yet I refuse to give in and make excuses.

I managed to read a few pages of The Desire Map last night and thankfully I happened to read about resistance.  I feel like my body is using sleep deprivation to make a case for resistance.  It’s been hard to keep up with meditation, healthy eating, juicing, writing, etc.  I still practice them daily but I would like to do more.  I could say “It’s okay, I have a newborn.”  “I also have a 16 month old and a just-turned-3-year-old.”  It’s not okay.  I will find a way.

“I’m changing,” we must remind ourselves.  Todd Herman, a sports psychology coach, has 5 techniques to enact when we feel resistance building:

  1. Deep breathing – instant energy for your cells!  I must add hot yoga to my ever growing list of things to do for this very reason.
  2. Focus on why you are doing what you’re doing.  How do you want to feel?
  3. Remind yourself:  I’m changing.  Your cells need time to grow and change, so give them the time they need to reshape themselves.
  4. Visualization: visualize the exact outcome you desire.
  5. Keep drafting your outcome.  You must fine-tune your desires daily and get clear on what exactly you want your life to be and how you want to feel.

These 5 steps are empowering!  Visualization is the key that turns the lock to your desires, so use it daily.  Especially in times of resistance.  Breathe, focus, and visualize!!!

I did, however, give in and snuggle this little man to sleep.  It’s the only way I can get anything done at the moment, and these moments won’t last forever.

Vegetable Cauliflower Rice

Bye-bye white rice.  Hello healthy vegetables that taste like take-out.  Well, not even, because take-out tastes horrible when you’re used to eating clean. This is delicious!

Plate and enjoy!

Chocolate Chip Cookies – “Paleo” version

paleocookiesIf you like cookies, then you’re going to want to make these as soon as humanly possible.  They are the most delicious cookies I have ever tasted, and they’re pretty much as healthy as cookies can get.  I’ve been making these about once a week for a very long time.

Adapted from this recipe here.

Paleo Chocolate Chip Cookies

  • 2 1/2 cups almond flour
  • 1/4 tsp sea salt
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil, melted
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 350° F.

In a bowl, mix almond flour, salt, and baking soda.

Add melted coconut oil, maple syrup, and vanilla extract and mix well.

Mix in chocolate chips and form cookie dough into balls.  Press each ball onto a cookie sheet with your palm.  You can either grease the sheet with coconut oil, or use a silpat sheet – my personal favourite.

Cook at 350° for 8 minutes.  Let cookies cool on the pan or else they will break!

Makes 18-20 cookies.

Blueberry Almond Bars

IMG_7401Breakfast is always a struggle in our house.  This morning I was inspired to play around with breakfast bars, and this was the delicious conclusion my 3 year old and I came up with.  Enjoy!

Blueberry Almond Bars

  • 1/4 cup agave
  • 1 cup dried blueberries
  • 1 cup almond flour
  • 1/4 tsp sea salt
  • 1/2 cup dried coconut
  • 1/2 cup walnuts (chopped)
  • 1/2 cup pumpkin seeds
  • 1/3 cup coconut oil, melted
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda

Place almond flour, coconut, salt, and baking soda into a large bowl and mix.  Add the rest of the ingredients and mix well.  Oil an 8 x 8 pan with coconut oil and press the mixture firmly into the base.

Bake at 350 degrees for 18-20 minutes.  Cool in the fridge for at least an hour before cutting to give them time to set.

Core Desired Feelings

Yuri turned me on to Danielle Laporte a few weeks ago.  She’s the queen of truth bombs on Instagram.  She says things like “Sadness brings you eye to eye with your desires.”  So true.  Last night we filled out her Core Desired Feelings worksheet and I came to these conclusions about how I want to feel in my life:

The Importance of Grounding

holdingearthWhen I am not grounded I feel incredibly anxious.  And when my partner is not grounded I am anxious times a thousand.  I can feel it.  To say there is tension in the air is an understatement.  When my partner isn’t grounded it’s like there is a spider web filling every ounce of space in the room, and I cannot avoid getting stuck in it.  It makes me physically ill when it’s there, and there is no escaping it.  Or is there?

This is when I send an emergency text to my energy healer and have her send clearing and grounding energy immediately.  When she is able to do so there is an immediate shift in the way I feel.  Suddenly there is no more emotional charge hijacking my soul.  I am no longer lost in the non-physical dimension of downward spiraled thought and I am present again.  Being grounded can actually turn a horrible experience into a very uplifting one.

How is this possible?  When we are grounded, energy is allowed to flow through our root chakra instead of getting stuck and building up.  Thoughts and feelings can flow through us rather than being over-processed by our minds.  Grounding allows us to be fully present in our physical body and allows us to enjoy what is happening in the current moment, irrespective of seemingly omnipresent problems.

How can you ground yourself?  Of course, not everyone has an energy healer on speed dial.  I often ground myself instead of calling wolf.  I only contact my energy healer if I’m having a do or die kind of moment, like when my partner’s ungrounded energy feels like it is literally going to kill me where I sit or stand.  I know I am very lucky to have this kind of help in my life.  Perhaps one day I will learn how to ground my partner, but for the time being I am able to ground myself.

treepose3 Ways to Ground Yourself

1) Walk Barefoot Outside.  This isn’t possible at the moment, being -10 C in Canada, but if it were even remotely feasible I would be out there rolling around in the earth right now.  Being in direct contact with the earth allows your body to assume the same electrical charge as the ground, stripping away the damaging electrical charges that unhinge us.  Alternatively you could probably go hug a tree!

2) Visualization.  Sit or stand with your feet touching the ground.  Imagine roots growing from the soles of your feet and see them diving deep into the earth where they wrap around the earth’s core.  Picture the earth sharing her energy with you and becoming one with the ground.  Tree pose in yoga is one of my favourite poses for this reason.  If you can visualize yourself as a tree and become one with the earth, it is amazing how strong your balance becomes.  It is for this reason that this pose is one of the very first poses performed in a yoga class!

3) Exercise and Proper Nourishment.  I find this the easiest way to stay grounded, simply because these habits promote grounding without necessarily having to think about it.  Clean eating and exercise are not difficult tasks once you make them a priority.  Daily exercise is important for the mind and body, but it’s not enough.  I would say that it’s even more important that you properly nourish yourself.  This means drinking filtered water and eating as clean as possible: fruits, vegetables, organic meats.  It also means limiting the bad stuff such as dairy and processed foods.  Eat as close to the earth as you possibly can.  This means preparing food from scratch rather than ordering pizza, though I have been known to order the odd pizza – I’m human after all.

Letting the Energy Flow

atomLately I have been listening to The Untethered Soul in audio book format.  I would highly recommend this book!  I am only about 1/3 of the way through it but it has already resonated with me so much.

It’s all about letting energy and experiences flow through you rather than holding onto events, both positive and negative.  It’s about being aware of your awareness and being in the present moment, which is something that I have been focusing on a lot during the past 7 weeks.

The best part about listening to an audio book is that you can multitask while you learn!  You can take a bath by candlelight and close your eyes while submerging yourself in self exploration, which is what I did last night.  Or you can listen while your 1 year old is thoroughly enthralled by Percy the train as he circles around the track for the 100th time, which is what I did this morning.

I have been going to a Quantum Energy Healer for some time now.  I can go into a session feeling so overwhelmed and just raw with emotion and 5 minutes later my energy field is completely sorted out and I am on top of the world.  I really could not have gotten through this personal crisis without her.  But now it is time for me to learn how to sort out my own energy field so that I can feel on top of the world all the time instead of texting her to sort out my depressive emergencies.  I really can not thank her enough for the love and care she has shown me.

In The Untethered Soul, Michael Singer makes it seem quite easy to keep your energy system flowing freely.  His advice is this: simply do not close yourself off.  Open your heart and leave it open.  For example, do not cower in fear if a stranger approaches you to chat, but be open to meeting someone new.  So far it really does seem that easy.

I don’t know where I came up with this personal motto, but I use it daily: Send love to those you initially judge.  There is one man in particular that has annoyed me every single day when I pick my son up from school.  Since starting this journey to reinvent myself, the next time I crossed his path I opened my heart and realized what a nice man he really is.  You really can open your heart and let go of thoughts that don’t serve you.  Feel them and let them pass through you rather than dwelling on them.  See your heart glowing with pink light and open yourself up to both send and receive love.  It really is that easy.

First you must be aware of things that bother you, acknowledge them, and then let them go.  Stay in the present moment and notice the next item that enters your physical world or your consciousness.  Energy and thoughts should be constantly flowing and not repeated or dwelled upon.  It may not be easy at first, but it is definitely worth the challenge to free yourself and unleash the power within.
