Obesity: Genetics or Environment?

overweight

Does it matter?  No.  Of course genetics play a role, but since you cannot control them, let’s focus on the environmental factors of obesity!  Genetics haven’t changed much in the last few decades, but our diets have changed markedly. So I’m going to venture a guess that environment plays a HUGE role.  Get your environment under control, and you’ll get your weight under control too.

No one ever got fat eating vegetables.  Eat your vegetables, cut down on the crap, and lose weight.  The problem is that you never see advertisements for vegetables.  All day, every day, you and your children are bombarded with commercials and advertisements for ice cream, dairy products, colas, pre-made pot roasts, chips, candy, cereals, etc.  But how many do you see for fresh fruits and vegetables?

In the last century alone we have seen the rise and proliferation of so many diseases.  It’s terrifying to think what will happen to the human race in the next 100 years.  It has been said that our generation will see their children live shorter lives than their parents, and I agree completely.  Poor diets and sedentary lifestyles are affecting our health and happiness at alarming rates.  We used to live in a world where malnutrition was the biggest problem – in North America and spreading elsewhere, it’s malnutrition coupled with obesity!  Yes, you can be fat and malnourished, and it’s more common than you think.

Obesity is very difficult to treat when the diet stays the same.  People go on diet after diet, trying – sometimes successfully losing weight, but dieting is not enough.  Until you realize that dieting is not the answer, you will remain fat and unhealthy.  A lifestyle change incorporating good quality whole foods and a consistent exercise schedule is the only way to get trim and fit – and stay there.  For some people, this may mean strict avoidance of processed foods, while others may be able to incorporate some of their favourite foods back into their healthy diet once they’ve gotten their cravings under control –  but for everyone, it means a diet high in fresh vegetables and some fruits – for life.

If you are a sugarholic, as many people are, you may find strict avoidance of sweets the only thing that keeps you dedicated to your healthy lifestyle.  Those who are addicted to sugar are the most likely to suffer from hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), and are also the people who should avoid sugar altogether.  Research has shown that people who eat sugar go through withdrawal symptoms, similar to drug abusers.  When you eat sugar, your blood sugar levels spike and insulin is released to store the sugar into your cells.  Some will be used as energy, some will be stored in the muscles, but the excess will be stored as fat.  Once the circulating sugar is stored, your blood sugar levels will be low, and you will crave another sugar fix.  As long as sugar is in your diet, the cycle will continue.

There is not one person that would not benefit from the avoidance of refined foods and the resulting blood sugar stability that comes with a wholesome, sugarless diet.  And while you may never be able to completely escape the advertisements and the bombardment of useless CRAP (Coffee, Refined Foods, Alcohol/Acidic foods, Preservatives…etc.), you can keep some awareness as to what you and your children are seeing on a daily basis.  The best advice I can give you is to keep CRAP out of the house.  You cannot eat what you don’t buy!

If you blame genetics for your problems, stop right there.  Genetics may give you the ability to become overweight, but it is your environment that causes it to occur.  Don’t give up like Oprah did either – when she started blaming her thyroid for her weight problems.  She had a thyroid problem because of her poor diet!  If you give up, you’ll never change your circumstances.  Whether it’s your weight or any other disease condition – they can all be improved – and often completely eradicated – by a healthy lifestyle.  You can blame food companies for your troubles all you want, because they are for sure part of the problem, but that too will not solve your problem.

What you simply cannot do is keep avoiding your dis-ease any longer.  After all, how many overweight seniors do you see on a daily basis?  My guess is not many.  So take control, get the help of a nutritionist if you need the support, and get healthy starting this second!  It’s never too late to change your diet – you’ll notice the effects of a healthy diet within days, and a huge difference within weeks!  The changes will be so evident that you’ll never want to go back!

What’s for Breakfast?

istock_berriesHave you ever seen the Nutella commercial where a woman tells us about how Nutella provides the energy her kids need?  That may be true, but the so-called energy they are getting via high amounts of sugar is really just sending their blood sugar through the roof and setting them up for some attention disorder symptoms in their first period class.

And its not only Nutella that sets you and your kids up for failure during the day.  Any commercial breakfast that contains wheat and high amounts of sugar will do the same thing – this means breakfast cereals, toast, porridge, toaster strudels, coffee, etc.

Coffee, even if it doesn’t contain any sugar at all, is one of the biggest culprits that sabotages your efforts to stay alert during the day – causing you to hit the wall.

Caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant which stimulates the adrenal glands to secrete adrenaline, the flight or fight hormone.  Though we rarely encounter lions and other predators in the daily grind, we have not yet lost this primal instinct.  When caffeine is consumed, it causes increased blood pressure, heart rate, perspiration, muscular tension, nervousness, and irritability.  The adrenals become fatigued and hypoglycemia results, causing the body to crave sugars and get blood sugar back up.

If you drink coffee daily, your adrenals will become exhausted and unable to respond to stress.  Stress does not include outer stresses like job stress or issues with family members, but overall stress on your body which includes dietary stressors as well.  I would go as far to say that dietary stress trumps all other stress on your body as the most detrimental type of stress.

If you can drink coffee and go straight to sleep after, you have likely exhausted your adrenals for so long that they simply don’t respond anymore!  Your days are likely long and fatigued as well if this is the case.

This is why it is important to start your day with whole foods – nutrients that will nourish the body and the cells rather than throw the body out of balance.  If your body is out of balance, it’s likely working far below its operating potential!  If you’re not operating at your full potential, it’s time to look at what fuel you are putting into your engine!

Opt for fresh, raw fruits and vegetables for breakfast.  Have a salad or a bowl of fruit.  Make your own almond milk with soaked almonds, sesame seeds, and sweeten it with a banana and pour it over some cut up apples and pears.  Make a smoothie or have a green juice.  In our house we start the day with barley greens, go for a workout, and then come home for something more substantial.  I usually opt for an avocado, but lately it’s been 3 apples.  Yum!

Yammy Meets Her Healer.

Today we went to a spiritual healer.  It was one of the most amazing things I have experienced in my healing journey. My mom has been talking about Nicole and Mel for months now.  And since we were coming for a visit, she was eager for us to experience their gifts.

I started the morning with my first ionic foot detox, and it was brilliant.  The specific machine that Nicole was using needed to tap into my energy in order for it to work.  She put the band on my wrist, and right away I felt the energy.  In fact, I have a little mark where the energetic contact was made…it looks like a little red rash.  My feet tingled from start to finish.  When it was done, she washed my feet of the sewage water and gave me a little massage using clay and oils that left my feet feeling so soft!  She told Mel to look out for the lymphatic and digestive systems when he did energy work on me.

This is where things got really interesting.  Mel, who I think may have been put on earth simply to save my life, is a spiritual healer who has the most incredible gift that I have ever personally experienced.  He started the session by explaining that each human being has a physical body and an etheric body, which is like a mirror image of the physical body, only made of energy.  From what I understand – all our life experiences occur in the physical and etheric bodies and are manifested in the physical body as uncomfort and disease when there is a blockage.  Healing must occur at the etheric level of energy to restore physical health and balance.

Now, I knew I was not in balance, but I had no idea what was “off”.  When Mel started working on me, I felt an immediate sense of relief.  The connection between him and my right hand was stronger than the left, and when he placed his hands over my ovaries, the feeling on the right was strong, while the left was weak.  He asked me why I thought the left was stronger, and I replied – “because it’s the male side”.  I didn’t even know I knew that, but it made sense to me…guess I have a big ego that needs to be put in place?  Mel told me he had a feeling that the energy in my left side had been blocked for a long time – even since puberty. Makes sense – I’ve been feeling off for a long time.

He spinned my left ovary to be in tune with the right, and I immediately felt a familiar pain in my left side.  I always thought it was my hip joint, but now I know it was imbalance in my etheric body manifesting in my physical body.  Then the pain gave way.  That was such an amazing moment.  All of a sudden I felt open and warm on the left side.  It was like a balloon inflated inside my left ovary!

Then he moved onto my digestive system, removing blockages, and opening up the energy field so much that my digestive system feels like it’s working properly for the first time in 13 years.

Next he built a bridge from my solar plexus to a place where creativity lives (often omitted from the 7 chakra system, but is between the solar plexus and the heart….I am not entirely clear on this)  I felt the bridge very stong on my left side.  This is also when we said that there is a lot more Amy trying to get out of me.  Yay!  I can’t wait to meet her.

Mel briefly went to the throat chakra where I nearly started to cry.  But he felt I wasn’t ready for that and left that can of worms inside for the time being.  I was relieved but highly intrigued by my emotional response.

I am so happy that Mel and Nicole came into my life.  I am really excited about seeing them again and I want to thank them for their brilliant energy work!

The Motorcyle Diary

This weekend was a blast.  It rained, it snowed, and my hands and feet froze to the point of digit death.  Yet, one of my instructors, Glenn, called me Smiley the entire 2 days.  I was one happy girl.  I was driving a motorcycle.  I’d always wanted to ride, but it was one of those things I never put on the front burner.  So if you’ve got anything on the back burner that you really want to do, I encourage you to do it now.  What are you waiting for!?

It all started with a yellow Vespa two months ago.  Out of nowhere, I walked into a scooter store and bought one.  The learning process had begun.  I found out that I needed a motorcycle license in Ontario to operate a scooter, so I came home and tossed a Motorcycle Handbook at my boyfriend, who said “You bought a scooter!?” He knows me so well.

Two days later I wrote my M1 test and could legally operate a scooter (or motorcycle) on the road – all by myself.  I picked up my scooter and drove home in downtown Toronto rush hour traffic thinking “I can’t believe I’m “qualified” to do this right now…”  Just another normal day in the life of Yammy.

What most people don’t know is that I crashed it 6 days later.  But I knew right then I wasn’t giving up.  My experience – and other riders who shared their experiences – taught me a few things.  1. Going slow is more difficult than going fast.  2. Riding classes are important. 3. Everyone dumps their bike at some point. 4. Sometimes other people dump your bike for you.  5. Get up, and forgive yourself.  6. Forgiving someone who pushes your bike over is very hard to do…so crash your bike yourself. 7. I am a better rider for dumping my scooter early on.

Back to the license issue.  Once you get the M1, you need to pass a driving test on a motorcycle to get your M2 (which lets you carry passengers, drive while dark, and go on the highway!), or settle for a limited speed M2 license by taking a scooter driving test (no highway!).  My feet were wet, and not wanting to be limited to a sissy scooter and slow roads, I signed up for a motorcycle class.  In 2 days I went from motorcycle virgin to passing my M1 exit test.  I now hold an M2 and can legally drive a Harley down the 401 with a passenger on my back.  Would I? Hell no!  I’m not crazy.  It just goes to show you how messed up our laws are in Ontario, Canada!

Those 2 days on a motorcycle changed my life.  I now want to trade in my yellow Vespa and get a motorcycle!  I guess I was meant to be a biker chick – or biker duck (picture me waddling my bike forward to park it).  Quack, quack.

My First Half Marathon!

Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon September 28, 2008

Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon September 28, 2008

Many months ago I signed up to run the Scotiabank half marathon in Toronto.  I had the best intentions to train properly, but as the day neared, I had only ran once in the last month!  Mental strength and proper nutrition saved me.

The first 10 K were the easiest.  I crossed this point after an hour and two minutes, and I felt great.  At the 12 K flags I saw my friend in the crowd, which gave me a pick-me-up for a few kms.  Sometimes I listened to music, while other times I listened to Yuri‘s coaching tracks.  It was nice to have him with me, encouraging me the whole way.  Whenever I needed some motivation, I tuned into him.  Most of the time I was present.  I was enjoying the run, and the pace.  I spent most of the race just being happy.

When I reached 16 K, my mental battles began.  Just a little break, I thought, just for a minute.  But I delayed the walking, and continued to run.  Over and over, I kept thinking “you can quit anytime, so why not quit at the end.”  I remembered the saying from one of Yuri’s recordings, and it really helped me through.

The last 500m were the absolute worst.  I had nearly convinced myself to quit when I remembered I had 20 K under my belt without walking, so I pushed on, saying over and over: “you can quit at the end.  You’ve made it so far.  Keep going!”  I think the biggest problem here was that we started and ended in the same place, so I knew exactly how far I had to run.  Although 500m isn’t far, when it’s at the end of a half marathon, it’s like China far!  Finally I crossed the finish line.  My legs were done, and I was smiling.  I collected my medal and joined my friends once again.  My time was 2:11:28.5 – not bad for not training.

We ran at the same time as the full marathoners, so there were people were ending at the same time as me, only they had run twice as far!  Some people just collapsed into the paramedic tent, completely exhausted, and their bodies frail.  I can’t imagine how they must have felt, considering I ran the half and couldn’t even walk.  It’s like someone took a bat to my entire body, giving special attention to my knees and ankles!

Would I do it again?  Maybe.  Now that I have a base time, it would be nice to see where training could get me.  It would be fun to see how well I could do fueled by wheatgrass and green juices!

Would I ever run a full marathon? Never.  Just seeing the marathoners looking close to death is enough to tell me that it’s really not necessary to put your body through that much stress.  It’s quite ridiculous actually!  But then I remember the saying “if it hurts, don’t do it again.”  So this very well may be my last half marathon!

Running is SO Easy!

Treadmill Trainer Volume 2

Treadmill Trainer Volume 2

I just got in from an accidental run that turned out to be my fastest, happiest run to date!

Sitting at my computer enjoying some raw chocolate pudding and a fabulous green juice, I simply had too much energy to sit still.  So I got out my ipod, downloaded Treadmill Trainer Volume 2 onto it, and set out for the boardwalk.

This is the first time I’ve finished the entire workout, and I seriously had a smile on my face the whole time!  There are 2 spots where Yuri says you can stop, and I’ve taken him up on his offer times before, but I was in the zone and feeling like I could just kill the workout.  And I did!  I even ran home after I finished stretching!

I love his workouts and the way he talks to you as if he’s right there beside you.  I even talk back to him and answer all of his questions out loud!  For example, when the workout was over he asks: “How are you feeling right now?” Amazing!  “How did you feel 10 minutes ago?”  Amazing!  “How did you feel when you woke up this morning?”  Umm…not this good…no.  (I had to talk myself into going to yoga this morning)  Then I patted myself on the back (because he told me to) and congratulated myself on running 10 k in approximately 45 minutes…and I’m not a runner!  For comparison, I ran a 5k in April and my time was 29:41…and I was dead tired and wanted to throw up…a lot.  What a difference!

I just recently started running, and I’ve only run two 10 k’s before tonight.  I usually just do 5 k’s because I get bored of running after 30 minutes.  But since I signed up for a half marathon 5 months ago, and put off training until pretty much right now, it’s time to get serious…hence the Treadmill Trainer series of workouts being downloaded to my ipod.  After tonight I feel certain I am going to have a competitive time in the run, and I really can’t wait to do it!  I think I’m going to do intervals during the run.  I’ll just listen to the Treadmill Trainers even then.  That would be funny.  The motivation he gives during the workouts is priceless.  I’m seriously going to listen to the training audio when I run the race.

I should definitely add:  I highly recommend Volumes 2 and 3 plus all the hill running stuff, but only get Volume 1 if you are JUST starting out.  It involves walking and running, perfect for beginners, but you may find it too slow if you have any experience.  That being said, Volume 2 will kick your a** no matter what level of runner you are!  If you disagree and think you’re some big time runner, then you HAVE to try it.  It’ll step up your game so much and you’ll be thankful for the challenge!!!  Happy running 🙂

Durian – Best Fruit Ever.

Durian Pudding

I fell in love with the durian about a year ago.  You never forget your first.  I brought it home from china town and plopped it on the kitchen table.  The next day, our whole house smelled literally like crap, and I hadn’t even opened it yet!  I’m pretty sure our house smelled bad for an entire week.  Lesson learned.  Now when we bring home durians – they sleep outside!

I just made what I call Durian Pudding – quite possibly my favourite food in the entire world.  And all it simply is, is durian fruit mixed with a spoonful of raw almond butter!

Durian Pudding

1 cup durian fruit
2 tbsp raw almond butter

Just throw the ingredients in a bowl and mix it up with a fork!  Instant custardy goodness.

Since some people find the smell so offensive, durian isn’t allowed on public transportation in some areas!  Hilarious and weird, because I don’t mind the smell anymore – I guess it’s because I know how yummy it is!

It may take you a few tries at eating it before you like it, and no two durian fruit taste the same, so I suggest you give it a few tries.  I never knew when I first tried it that I would ever declare it my favourite food ever, so you just never know how you’ll react!

Raw Enchiladas!

raw-6059

Last night we had the best dinner, and in spite of what you may think it was incredibly easy to put together – but, a dehydrator is a necessity. So if you don’t have one…it’s time to invest in one!  Honestly though, if you don’t have a dehydrator you could just throw the ingredients (plus some fresh corn kernels) in a bowl and have an enchilada salad!

Easy Raw Corn Tortillas

  • 3 cups of fresh corn kernels
  • 1 cup milled flax seeds
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1 zucchini, chopped
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt
  • 2 tbsp nutritional yeast
  • 1 1/2 cups water

Place all ingredients in a food processor and pulse until well combined.  Then mix until smooth.

Spread thin on a dehydrator sheet in whatever shape you desire and dehydrate at 110 F for 4-5 hours or until no longer doughy on top.  Flip and dehydrate another 3-4 hours.

Guacamole

  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 small tomato, chopped
  • 1/4 small red onion, minced
  • juice of 1 lime
  • 3 avocados, mashed with a fork
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt
  • optional: 1 handful of cilantro, roughly chopped

Mash avocados with a fork and then add the rest of the ingredients.  If it doesn’t taste amazing, then there are 2 things you have to play with: the amount of sea salt and the amount of lime juice.  Play with these until this is the best guacamole you’ve ever tasted.

Easy Raw Tomato Sauce

  • 1 cup tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup sun dried tomatoes
  • 1 red pepper
  • dash cayenne

Place all ingredients in a food processor and pulse until desired consistency is reached.

Raw Cashew Cheese Sauce – Seriously the best ever!

  • 1 cup cashews
  • 1/2 yellow pepper
  • 2 tbsp wheat-free tamari
  • 1 tbsp nutritional yeast
  • 1 clove garlic
  • juice of 1 lemon
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric

Place all ingredients in a food processor and pulse until combined, slowly adding water until the consistency you desire is reached, keeping in mind that it will get thicker as it sits and the cashews have a chance to absorb the water.  Alternatively you can also blend in a high speed blender to get a velvet smooth consistency.

To assemble the enchilada I just chopped up some lettuce and tossed it on the corn tortilla, layered it with guacamole and rolled it up.  We splashed on the tomato and cheese sauces and quickly took a picture (which is obviously not too artistic) just before our ravenous stomachs got a hold of it!

Fighting the Dairy Advocates.

Being one who tries desperately to avoid dairy products, it is unfathomable that others would even consider drinking a glass of milk. There are so many reasons to avoid it that there isn’t a chance I can share all of my reasons why right now…you’re going to have to wait for the book to hit store shelves!

I am currently doing research for the aformentioned book and I stumbled across a study done at Loughborough University in the United Kingdom, which is just an example of all the ridiculous studies out there that are so horribly designed that they’re just wasting time and money that could be put to much better use!

This particular study looked at the effects of drinking milk on exercise, which could have yielded some terrific results had it been designed correctly. The researchers had its participants drink either water, a sports drink, 1% milk, or 1% milk with added sugar before and every 10 minutes during exercise. They concluded, and I quote “exercise time to exhaustion was not significantly influenced by the drink ingested but there was a tendency for subjects to exercise longer when the carbohydrate-electrolyte, milk, or milk plus glucose was ingested compared with water.”  No kidding geniuses!

Their bodies are already swimming in crap associated with all the milk and ice cream, etc. over the past few days. A better study would have lasted weeks and had the participants eliminate all dairy from their diets, look at exercise with glucose and water, and then introduce dairy over a few days and look at exercise again with dairy and glucose.  The re-introduction of dairy would probably make them too ill to exercise!

It’s so frustrating when most studies are designed by people backed by the dairy industry…of course they’re not going to design a study that sheds the light on its horrendous effects on the human body!

Creamy Coconut Cashew Nut Milk and a Creamy Strawberry Shake

Creamy Coconut Cashew Nut Milk

2 cups filtered water
1 cup cashews
2 tbsp coconut butter
4 dates
1 tsp vanilla extract (or 1/4 of a vanilla bean, seeds only)

Place all ingredients in a high speed blender and blend until smooth.  If you don’t have a high speed blender like the vitamix, you can place all ingredients in a blender and let them sit for a couple of hours until the cashews and dates soften.

I HIGHLY recommend investing in a vita-mix.  It’s so powerful that it can turn an ipod into dust – I’m sure you can find some interesting videos on youtube.  I use my vita-mix at least 4 times a day.  You can make nut milks without having to use a strainer, and make the smoothest raw cheesecake you’ve ever tasted.

And since I happened to have fresh strawberries in the fridge – voila!  Instant strawberry shake.

Silky Strawberry Smoothie

Creamy Strawberry Shake

1 batch Creamy Coconut Cashew Nut Milk
1 cup fresh strawberries

Blend all ingredients in a high powered blender until smooth.

The funny thing about strawberries is that when you pick them yourself, their size range from that of a raspberry to…a slightly larger raspberry! They taste so sweet and just downright incredible.  When you buy them imported from who knows where, they’re the size of peaches and they taste sour and just gross!  If you missed them this time around, don’t miss out on picking your own (or buying, although picking your own can be fun) local berries next season!
